How do we Become Overheated and Why is this a Danger?
We spend too much time in the heat and sun, our body temperature increases. This leads to things like heat rash, dizziness, heat exhaustion and dehydration. This is because the body heats and can no longer cool itself adequately. If you don’t get out of the heat and sun, drink plenty of fluid and lower your body temperature, you could be at risk for heat stroke, even leading to death. This is especially so for the elderly, very young, ill, over weight, pregnant, and for pets.
We usually see this happening outdoors. But under unfavorable circumstances, it can happen inside. How?
To start with, some homes are so well built that a combination of insulation, double glazed windows and tight sealing can work against comfort if the sun is allowed to pour through the windows. Maybe the heat is left on, ventilation is missing and there is poor or no air-conditioning.
This build-up in heat will depend on how the home is oriented, facing south or west, even if there are shutters and blinds.
Add to this the age of the home and the habits of the occupants. For example, is it a hot day, but a roast beef is baking in the oven? Were the pets left inside with the heat still on, the windows closed and the afternoon temperature expected to reach the 90’s? What if the power goes out and a disabled person is alone?
Simply not Being Able to Open Windows to Let Air in can Cause Serious Overheating
Lighting, appliances, washing machines and dryers, TVs, computers, and electronic tools add to the heat of the environment.
Cities themselves bring more heat to homes from the urban heat island effect. To help lower this, additions of green spaces and preservation areas are growing, including man made lakes and waterways. Such as, Chicago. They expanded their Chicago Wilderness Project with green and blue space that has grown to 100,000 hectares within the city.
