All that we behold is full of blessings.” –William Wordsworth
What’s on Your Thanksgiving Plate?
For the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621, the colony members and their Wampanoag guests harvested and hunted, serving a variety of fowl, wildlife and food from the field. Many of these dishes were likely prepared using traditional Native American spices and cooking methods.
The Mayflower’s sugar supply had dwindled by the fall, thus the meal likely did not feature pies, cakes or other desserts. Since then, the array of American cultures, and the availability of worldwide cuisine have influenced the menu, but the thankful spirit has not changed.
What are you serving, or are you a guest? Turkey? Trout? But leave room for the dessert!
As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” –John Fitzgerald Kennedy
